League Announces Group Ride Curriculum; Partnership with MS-150
Washington, D.C.—November 1, 2006—Starting this month, the National MS Society is partnering with the League of American Bicyclists to train ride leaders and participants in group riding skills. The training will be based on the League’s renowned BikeEd program, and will be specifically tailored to MS rides.
The group ride training was originally developed by LCI Bill Edwards, with assistance from LCI Preston Tyree, for the BP MS 150 Houston to Austin Bike Tour in 2003. It was fully implemented starting in 2004. This program has led to an increase in safety awareness among bike tour participants and an annual decrease in rider-related medical transports.
"We would like to see a continued decrease in our medical transports" said Barry Turner, director of development for the Lone Star Chapter. "We believe that our partnership with the League will promote and continue rider education and increase the riders’ cycling knowledge and skills as they prepare for and participate in the MS 150 Bike Tours."
In 2006, the training will also be pilot-tested at MS Bike Tours in Orange County, Calif. and San Antonio, Texas. “As a past participant, ride leader and marshal, I know how important education is to safety on the road,” said League Board Member Preston Tyree. “I am excited to be working with the National MS Society to take the lessons we’ve learned in Houston and
disseminate them nationally.”
Launching in 2007, the packaged training will be available to all chapters. The program will continue to be expanded, with the goal of nationwide adoption by 2010. To learn more about the program, contact Bill Nesper at bill@bikeleague.org.
