Cyclist = Terrorist?
(Image from teamspider.com)
I'm not a fan of Critical Mass since it involves riding illegally in too many cases. Granted, there are a few who ride legally, but the ones that get publicity are the most lawless. Welcome to the media world. But even I have to say that this one is so outrageous, so over the top, that it's mind-bending stupidity can give you a headache:
Sunday, March 2, 2008 Terrorists on Two Wheels.
Last Sunday morning, a 29-year-old Chicago man rode his bicycle through a busy intersection in my neighborhood, against the traffic light, and was struck and killed by an SUV.
Since the only person who died was the bicycle rider, it will seem very odd that I'm going to call him a terrorist. Stay with me on this.
"Terrorism" is defined as "the unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons."
...Because kids do crazy things, most of the riders probably had only a vague understanding of the movement's ideological underpinnings, although the guy who died last week wasn't a kid, he was 29.
The ideology at work is a form of nihilist extremism. The only real difference between this and flying hijacked airplanes into buildings is one of degree. It comes from the same place. Now this extreme political movement has a new martyr.
There you have it, folks! All those lycra-clad, sweaty cyclists are terrorists. Put 'em on the next plane to Gitmo.

Far out.
What a scumbag.
That was different. Comparing a dead bicycle rider to Saudi terrorists flying planes into buildings.
Nice
It was a freakin' alleycat, not a CM ride -- for Mr Chuck Cowdery to equate a bunch of guys engaging in insane dangerous fun to "an extreme political movement" is just ignorant. And to call a (mostly) non-violent low key pro-bike statement an "an extreme political movement" and equate it with terrorists ramming planes into buildings is about as fascist anti-liberty unAmerican as you can get.
Remember when the Tulsa Co Sheriff told me that the locals west of downtown Tulsa refer to the Wed night ride folks as "Two Wheeled Terrorists"? I guess he was a trend setter :)
Show me a drunken reckless, outta control law-breaking cyclist, I'll show you a village idiot impersonating Santa at the Annual TPD Awards Banquet.
Cyclists running red lights, blowing through stop signs? So WHAT?
Beyond the VC propaganda---The current traffic rules developed because of the significant potential damage caused by motor vehicles. Mandatory insurance is good public policy because 1,500 lbs. of metal and rubber smacking into stuff KILLS.
There's no need for liability insurance because bicyclists do minimal damage to others.
Ah, crap. I'm just preaching to the CHOIR.
